United States Senator Claire McCaskill today became the first sitting member of Congress to endorse Hillary Clinton for President in 2016, by announcing her support of the Ready for Hillary movement. Clinton has not yet expressed an intention to run for President in 2016. Ready for Hillary is a Super PAC dedicated to mobilizing Clinton’s supporters and laying the groundwork for her presidential campaign, should she choose to run. It is the foremost organization urging Clinton to make a bid for the presidency in 2016.
Sen. McCaskill has previously expressed a hope that former Secretary of State Clinton would run for President in 2016. McCaskill has called Ready for Hillary “critical” to the success of a potential Clinton campaign.
“It’s important that we start early,” McCaskill has said, “building a grassroots army from the ground up, and effectively using the tools of the Internet – all things that President Obama did so successfully – so that if Hillary does decide to run, we’ll be ready to help her win.” Sen. McCaskill has also praised Ready for Hillary for their efforts bring supporters of the 2008 Obama campaign into the fold.
Ready for Hillary Senior Advisor Craig T. Smith has said, “Like Hillary, Senator McCaskill is a fighter – dedicated in her efforts to strengthen accountability in government – and a champion for women, children, and families. Ready for Hillary is fortunate to have such a powerful and respected leader like Claire joining our grassroots team.”
Senator McCaskill joins former governor of Michigan Jennifer Granholm, EMILY’s List founder Ellen Malcolm, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, among others, in support of Ready for Hillary. The grassroots organization was founded in February 2013. As of late May, it had received financial contributions from more than 3,000 supporters. Ready for Hillary has reached more than 150,000 supporters via its Facebook page, which continues to reach an average of more than 1,000 new supporters daily.
Ready for Hillary believes that Hillary Clinton is the most qualified candidate to follow Barack Obama as President. Supporters of Ready for Hillary feel that Clinton is the best choice to unify and strengthen the diverse Democratic Party; she already has strong support from traditionally blue states, and has the potential to turn the political tide in her favor and win over traditionally red states. Ready for Hillary also feels the Clinton is the ideal candidate to protect and continue the progress made by the Obama administration.
